A SEISMOGRAPH TO OBSERVE DEVIATORIC STRAINS

THE DESIGN IS DESCRIBED OF A SEISMOGRAPH INTENDED TO DETECT SHAPE CHANGES IN A GROUND SAMPLE. ELASTIC WAVES OF ALL FREQUENCIES DOWN TO ZERO ARE RECORDED WITHOUT DISTORTION. THE AMPLITUDE RANGE IS FROM THE MICROSEISMIC NOISE LEVEL TO INFINITY. THE SENSING ELEMENT IS AN INTERFEROMETER FORMED BY REFLECTORS OUTLINING A TETRAHEDRON, THE LIGHT BEING SUPPLIED BY A SINGLE LASER. THE ARRANGEMENT ELIMINATES SOURCE FREQUENCY AS A VARIABLE, AT THE SAME TIME IT MAKES POSSIBLE SEPARATION OF WAVE MODES AND DIRECTIONAL RECEPTION. /AUTHOR/
