NEWPORT BRIDGE FOUNDATIONS

THE NEWPORT BRIDGE, 11,248 FT ACROSS NARRAGANSETT BAY IN RHODE ISLAND, WILL INCLUDE A SUSPENSION BRIDGE WITH A CENTER SPAN OF 1,600 FT AND TWO SIDE SPANS OF 687 FT EACH, AS WELL AS VARIOUS TRUSS, PLATE GIRDER AND PRESTRESSED CONCRETE STRINGER SPANS. THE BAY AREA IS GENERALLY OVERLAIN WITH SILTY SAND CONTAINING A LITTLE GRAVEL. ROCK FORMATIONS ARE GENERALLY MEDIUM TO HARD SHALE. STUDIES INDICATED THAT, BECAUSE OF THE GREAT DEPTH OF WATER AT THE TOWER PIERS, THE USUAL FLOATING CAISSON TYPE OF CONSTRUCTION FOR THE FOUNDATIONS WOULD HAVE BEEN TOO COSTLY. AN ALTERNATIVE DESIGN, EMPLOYING A HOLLOW PIER STRUCTURE WITH WALLS AND FOOTINGS OF STRUCTURAL CONCRETE - POURED BY THE TREMIE METHOD AND SUPPORTED ON STEEL PILES PENETRATING DEEP INTO THE BAY BOTTOM--WAS ADOPTED. THE TOWER SHAFT FORMS WERE FLOATED TO THE SITE IN A HORIZONTAL POSITION, THEN RAISED BY A COMBINATION OF LIFTING AND OF CONTROLLING, WITH AIR AND WATER VALVES, THE AMOUNT OF WATER TAKEN INTO THEIR WATERTIGHT INTERIORS. THEY WERE THEN SUNK INTO POSITION ON THE FOOTING FORMS. IN ALL, THE BRIDGE FOUNDATIONS TOOK SOME 90,000 CU YD OF CONCRETE TREMIED INTO PLACE. THE AUTHORS DESCRIBE THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF THE VARIOUS OTHER FOUNDATIONS USED INCLUDING DRILLED-IN CAISSON, PILES, AND SPREAD FOOTINGS. /ASCE/
