CONSTRUCTION OF THE MONMOUTH TUNNELS IN SOFT ROCK

THE PROVISION OF TEMPORARY ROOF SUPPORT DURING THE DRIVING OF A TUNNEL IN SOFT ROCK PRESENTS THE ENGINEER WITH A CONTINUAL PROBLEM: TO OBTAIN STABILITY OF THE TUNNEL AND MAXIMUM SAFETY AT MINIMUM COST TO THE ECONOMY OF THE CONSTRUCTION CYCLE. A RELATIVELY NEW APPROACH TO THIS PROBLEM, THE DEVELOPMENT AND USE OF A ROCK SHIELDS IS DESCRIBED. THIS PARTICULAR APPLICATION WAS IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF LARGE DIAMETER TWIN TUNNELS HAVING A CAST IN SITU, REINFORCED CONCRETE LINING. EXPERIENCE GAINED DURING THE DRIVE, COSTS AND CONCLUSIONS ARE ALSO GIVEN. /RRL(A)/
