THE DETERMINATION OF SAFETY COEFFICIENTS IN SOIL MECHANICS AND FOUNDATIONS /IN ITALIAN/

IN FOUNDATION PROBLEMS THE VALUE OF THE SAFETY COEFFICIENT IS FREQUENTLY LEFT TO THE CHOICE OF THE PROJECT DESIGNER WHO DETERMINES IT AFTER A SUBJECTIVE ESTIMATION OF THE FACTORS WHICH INFLUENCE THIS VALUE. CONSIDERATIONS BASED ON THE THEORY OF PROBABILITIES PERMIT A MORE OBJECTIVE METHOD OF DETERMINING SAFETY COEFFICIENTS BY MEANS OF THE SEMI-PROBABILISTIC ANALYSIS OF THE INFLUENCING FACTORS AND OF THE PRECISION OF THEIR ESTIMATION. CASES OF FOUNDATION STABILITY, TEST LOADING OF FOUNDATION PILES AND DYNAMIC PILE DRIVING FORMULAE ARE CONSIDERED, AND IT IS SHOWN THAT BY THE USE OF CERTAIN PARTIAL COEFFICIENTS IT IS POSSIBLE TO CALCULATE THE VARIOUS FACTORS LIKELY TO INFLUENCE STABILITY.
