SOME ASPECTS OF THE EXTERNAL MAINTENANCE OF TANKERS

Reviews paint maintenance problems below and above the waterline. Methods of retarding hull roughness are considered including criteria for the selection of materials, and treatment in drydock. The effect of hull roughness on ships' speed is considered. Above the waterline the need for painting is examined and the requirements of maintenance considered. The prevention of corrosion and the requirement for good appearance are shown to be mutually compatible. The problems of painting decks and superstructures are also considered.
