THE SHEAR RESISTANCE OF SOILS

SINCE THE ADVENT OF MODERN SOIL MECHANICS, THEORIES OF SHEAR RESISTANCE AND THEIR PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS HAVE ENGAGED THE ATTENTION OF SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS IN THIS FIELD. IN SPITE OF EXTENSIVE RESEARCH, A CONSIDERABLE VOLUME OF PAPERS AND DETAILED RECORDED DISCUSSIONS, HOWEVER, THE PRESENT STATE OF OUR KNOWLEDGE CONCERNING THE SHEAR RESISTANCE OF SOILS IS FAR FROM SATISFACTORY. THIS LECTURE SUMMARIZES SOME OF THE RESULTS OF RECENT RESEARCH ON SUCH TOPICS AS SHEAR RESISTANCE CHARACTERISTICS, FAILURE CRITERIA, EFFECT OF INTERMEDIATE STRESS ON FAILURE, STRESS- STRAIN RELATIONSHIPS UNDER STRESS CONDITIONS, TRIAXIAL TESTING, AND THE RELIABILITY OF TEST RESULTS. /A/RRL/
