EXPERIMENTAL CONTRIBUTION TO THE STUDY OF THE ULITMATE EQUILIBRIUM OF SAND UNDER DIRECT FOUNDATIONS. DETERMINATION OF THE FORM SB COEFFICIENT. PART I. /IN FLEMISH/

DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF A SERIES OF TESTS CARRIED OUT ON SMALL-SCALE MODELS SUPPORTED BY MOL SAND. A LATERAL OVERLOAD WAS APPLIED BY MEANS OF RUBBER BAGS RESTING ON A STEEL PLATE AND IN WHICH A CONSTANT AIR-PRESSURE COULD BE MAINTAINED. THIS PROCESS ELIMINATED THE SHEARING STRENGTH IN THE LAYERS ABOVE THE LEVEL OF THE FOUNDATIONS, AND WAS CHOSEN IN ORDER TO SEPARATE VARIABLES (THE BEARING CAPACITY BEING EXTREMELY SENSITIVE TO THE STATE OF COMPACTION). IN ORDER TO OBTAIN HOMOGENEOUS COMPACTION, THE TEST TROUGH WAS FILLED AUTOMATICALLY. VARIOUS COMPACTIONS WERE ACHIEVED BY LETTING THE SAND FLOW FROM DIFFERENT HEIGHTS AND BY VARYING THE FLOW FROM THE SAME HEIGHT. A NUMBER OF METHODS WAS TRIED FOR THE ACCURATE DETERMINATION OF THE COMPACTION OBTAINED. ONE METHOD WAS FINALLY ADOPTED WHICH CONSISTED IN MEASURING THE TOTAL WEIGHT AND VOLUME OF THE SAND IN THE TROUGH. THE INTRINSIC WAVE OF A SAND FOR A GIVEN COMPACTION IS NOT A STRAIGHT LINE BUT A CURVE; BECAUSE OF THIS, THE SHEARING STRENGTH OF SAND CANNOT BE CHARACTERIZED BY ONE VALUE ONLY OF THE SHEARING ANGLE. IN ORDER TO CHARACTERIZE THE INFLUENCE OF NORMAL STRESS VALUE ON SHEARING STRENGTH, THE INCLINATION OF THE STRAIGHT LINE WHICH GOES THROUGH THE ORIGIN OF THE PLANE AND IS TANGENT TO THE CIRCLE CHARACTERIZING THE LIMIT STATE IS DETERMINED.
