Risk Analysis and Pedestrian Crossing Behaviour

The objective of this article is to deal with the study of the risk associated with pedestrians crossing the road. Three locations in Chandigarh with varying road widths were used for the study. Videography was adopted to capture the crossing behavior of pedestrians. Various pedestrian characteristics such as method of crossing, crossing speed and gap acceptance were extracted from the video and this data formed an input to the analysis of the risk, which was estimated on the risk index and the average safety margin adopted by pedestrians while crossing the road. The article found that the crossing speed was higher for male pedestrians than for female pedestrians at all of the study locations. Young pedestrian’s crossing speed is 26 to 46% higher than that of older pedestrians and the difference increases with the increase in road width. The risk index for older pedestrians is low on intermediate roads and high to very high on 4 to 6 lane roads.
