SHEAR STRENGTH OF SOME ARGILLACEOUS ROCKS

FAILURE CRITERIA UNDER TRIAXIAL COMPRESSION WERE STUDIED TO DETERMINE THE MOHR SHEAR ENVELOPE FOR FOUR TEST SPECIMENS AT TWO ORIENTATIONS WITH RESPECT TO THEIR PLANAR ANISOTROPY. THE ENVELOPES OBTAINED COULD NOT BE DESCRIBED COMPLETELY BY THE COULOMB-MOHR EQUATION. EXPERIMENTAL EVIDENCE SUGGESTED THAT THE DEVIATION OF THE MEASURED SHEAR ANGLES FROM THE MOHR PREDICTED ANGLES VARRIED WITH THE ORIENTATION OF THE SPECIMEN AND THE MAGNITUDE OF THE CONFINING PRESSURE. /RRL/
