THE MOVEMENT AND DISTRIBUTION OF WATER IN SOILS

FUNDAMENTAL FACTORS ARE DISCUSSED WHICH GIVE RISE TO MOISTURE MOVEMENTS IN SOIL AND METHODS ARE OUTLINED FOR ESTIMATING THE MOISTURE DISTRIBUTION WITH DEPTH BENEATH IMPERVIOUS PAVEMENTS UNDER EQUILIBRIUM CONDITIONS. SOIL MOISTURE IS USUALLY CLASSIFIED IN TERMS OF: (1) GRAVITATIONAL WATER WHICH MOVES TOWARDS THE WATER-TABLE UNDER THE ACTION OF GRAVITY, (2) GROUND WATER, CONTAINED BELOW THE LEVEL OF THE WATER-TABLE, AND (3) HELD WATER WHICH IS RETAINED ABOVE THE WATER-TABLE AFTER ALL MOVEMENT OF GRAVITATIONAL WATER HAS CEASED. THE FOLLOWING MOISTURE DISTRIBUTION THEORIES ARE OUTLINED: SOIL MOISTURE SUCTION, THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SOIL SUCTION AND MOISTURE CONTENT FOR COMPRESSIBLE AND IMCOMPRESSIBLE SOILS, SOIL SUCTION AND THE DISTRIBUTION OF MOISTURE IN SOIL, THE ESTIMATION OF THE EQUILIBRIUM MOISTURE DISTRIBUTION WITH DEPTH UNDER AND INFINITE IMPERVIOUS PAVEMENT, MOISTURE DISTRIBUTION AND NON-UNIFORM SOILS, AND APPLICATION OF THE EQUILIBRIUM MOISTURE DISTRIBUTION CONCEPT TO ROADS AND AIRFIELDS. THE FOLLOWING THREE APPROACHES ARE BEING USED AT THE ROAD RESEARCH LABORATORY TO VERIFY THE MOISTURE DISTRIBUTION THEORIES: (1) DURING THE INVESTIGATION OF SEVERAL ROAD FOUNDATION FAILURES ON CLAY SUBGRADES, THE MOISTURE DISTRIBUTION WITH DEPTH HAS BEEN STUDIED BY BORING AND SAMPLING, (2) THE PROGRAM OF RESEARCH RECENTLY CONDUCTED IN WHICH THE SEASONAL VARIATIONS IN MOISTURE CONTENT ARE BEING MEASURED BENEATH PAVED AREAS AND IN ADJACENT UNCOVERED SOIL, AND (3) EXPERIMENTS ARE IN PROGRESS WITH CLAY BLOCKS EXCAVATED FROM A DEPTH OF ABOUT 20 FEET IN WHICH CHANGES OF PORE-WATER PRESSURE ARE BEING OBSERVED BY TENSIOMETERS, SWELLING BY DIAL GAUGES, AND SUCTION PROPERTIES STUDIED INDEPENDENTLY.
