THE PORE-PRESSURE COEFFICIENTS A AND B

AN EQUATION IS GIVEN AND RELATIONSHIPS EXPLAINED INVOLVING THE CHANGE IN PORE PRESSURE OCCURRING UNDER CHANGES IN TOTAL STRESSES IN THE UNDRAINED SHEAR STRENGTH OF SOILS. THE EQUATION IS DERIVED AND THE PORE-PRESSURE COEFFICIENTS EXPLAINED. THESE COEFFICIENTS ARE MEASURED EXPERIMENTALLY IN THE UNDRAINED TRIAXIAL TEST. IN SATURATED SOILS, THE COEFFICIENT B IS EQUAL TO 1 WHEN THE DEGREE OF SATURATION IS EQUAL TO 1. FOR DRY SOILS B EQUALS 0, WHEN THE DEGREE OF SATURATION EQUALS 0. FOR ANY GIVEN SOIL, THE COEFFICIENT A VARIES WITH THE STRESSES AND THE STRAINS. ALTERNATIVE FORMS OF THE PORE-PRESSURE EQUATION ARE GIVEN FOR VARIOUS APPLICATIONS.
