Battery-Powered Trains: Feasibility Study for Battery Energy Storage and Propulsion on Trains

This paper discusses a study that has been conducted of battery powered trains, and their possible use in providing alternative sources of propulsion and battery energy storage. The study examined the technology of on-board storage of electrical energy, and its utilization for accommodating the power and energy requirements of specific routes in particular case studies; and the possible design of an automated system for quickly exchanging batteries that have been discharged with charged batteries at railroad stations.
