THE RAILROAD YARD WITH WET FEET

A STUDY OF THE CONSTRUCTION OF ONE OF THE MOST ADVANCED ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED RAILROAD YARDS IN THE COUNTRY WAS MADE. THE HUMPYARD, LOCATED OUTSIDE MACON, GEORGIA, IS A MODEL OF EFFICIENCY IN FREIGHT TRANSPORTATION. A 205 FOOT, 26-FOOT-DIAMETER ARMCO MULTI-PLATE PIPE TRAIN TUNNEL, THE LARGEST SUCH CORRUGATED STEEL STRUCTURE IN THE WORLD, WAS INSTALLED UNDER THE HUMP OF THE MACON YARD. INSTALLATION OF THE TRAIN TUNNEL AS WELL AS OF THE DRAINAGE FACILITIES IS DESCRIBED IN DETAIL.
