NOTES ON THE STUDIES MADE ON LAND SLIDES

TWO LAND SLIDES ON INTERSTATE 81, NORTH OF ROANOKE, VIRGINIA WERE STUDIED. ALL STANDARD PROCEDURES TO STOP THE SLIDE WERE TRIED AND FAILED. EXPERIMENTATION WAS THEN CONDUCTED ON STABILIZATION OF THE SOIL BY SATURATION WITH KCL SOLUTION. BASED ON THE DATA OBTAINED IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT THE SATURATION OF THE SOIL SAMPLES WITH KCL SOLUTION SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVED THE UNCONFINED COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH. THESE RESULTS, HOWEVER, PERTAIN TO REMOLDED SAMPLES PREPARED UNDER LABORATORY CONDITIONS AND SATURATED WITH HIGHLY CONCENTRATED SOLUTIONS. CHEMICAL STABILIZATION DOES OFFER PROMISE IN ARRESTING THE MOVEMENT OF THE LAND SLIDES.
