DETERMINATION AND INTERPRETATION OF ACTIVE AND PASSIVE EARTH PRESSURE EQUILIBRIA OF A NON-COHESIVE SOIL

TESTS MADE ON A LARGE MASS OF SOIL OR OTHER MATERIAL HAVING ANY EXTENT OF FREE SURFACE AND PRESSING AGAINST A VERTICAL OR INCLINED RETAINING WALL WHCIH UNDERGOES NEGLIGIBLE MOVEMENT ARE DISCUSSED. FORMULAS FOR ACTIVE AND PASSIVE EARTH-PRESSURE ARE DEVELOPED FOR A WALL RETAINING GRANULAR MATERIALS /AS IN A SILO/ IN TERMS OF THE NATURAL ANGLE OF REST /20-45 DEGREES/ OF THE MATERIALS, THE ANGLE OF SLOPE OF THE NON-COHESIVE MASS WITH THE HORIZONTAL PLANE, AND THE INCLINATION OF THE WALL WITH THE HORIZONTAL. RESULTS SHOW THE SURFACE STATE OF THE RETAINING WALL DOES NOT AFFECT THE ACTIVE OR PASSIVE EARTH-PRESSURE. /AUTHOR/
