RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE TOTAL AND THE EFFECTIVE STRESS- FAILURE ENVELOPES IN SATURATED COHESIVE SOILS

BASED ON EXPERIMENTS WITH SATURATED KAOLINITE CLAY, A RELATIONSHIP IS SHOWN BETWEEN MAXIMUM PRINCIPAL FAILURE STRESS OBTAINED DURING CONSOLIDATED UNDRAINED TESTS AND MAXIMUM DEVIATOR STRESS OBTAINED FROM SLOW TESTS. A NEW METHOD IS PROPOSED FOR DETERMINING EFFECTIVE STRESS ENVELOPE FROM RESULTS OF CONSOLIDATED UNDRAINED TESTS WITHOUT PORE- PRESSURE MEASUREMENTS. THIS METHOD IS APPLICABLE TO RELIABLE TEST RESULTS OBTAINED BY OTHER INVESTIGATORS ON BLUE BOSTON CLAY, ON SATURATED SOILS USED IN CHEW STOKE DAM, AND ON SOILS USED IN BINGA DAM IN THE PHILIPPINES AND IN HIRFANLI DAM IN TURKEY.
