PRESSURE CELL USING SEMICONDUCTOR GAUGES

A CELL FOR MEASURING SMALL PRESSURES IN GRANULAR SOILS MAKES USE OF SEMICONDUCTOR STRAIN GAUGES ACTIVATED BY A DEFLECTING DIAPHRAGM. THE VERY SMALL DEFLECTION REQUIRED ALMOST ELIMINATES ARCHING OF MATERIAL OVER THE CELL. THE DESIGN OF THE CELL IS DESCRIBED AND THE RESULTS OF TESTS IN A SAND BATH ARE GIVEN. THE CELLS ARE SENSITIVE TO TEMPERATURE VARIATION AND TESTS SHOW THAT THE MEASURED STRAIN VARIES BY UP TO 3 PER CENT PER DEGREE CENTIGRADE OF TEMPERATURE CHANGE. /RRL/
