A NEW ANALYSIS OF RAILROAD YARD OPERATIONS

Although several models of railroad yard performance have been developed in the past twenty years, none of them are in active use in the daily conduct of railroad freight transportation. Three basic models are discussed. Another model is developed using an eight-week sample of daily performance data. Factor analysis is used as an analytic tool to discern the patterned relationships among the data. The final model developed by the authors is considerably different from previous models, and because of its strong base in empirical investigation it is believed that it is a more viable model than its predecessors.
