A REVIEW OF THE STANDARD DIRECT SHEAR METHOD FOR OBTAINING THE PEAK EFFECTIVE STRESS SHEAR PARAMETERS OF A SOIL

AN INVESTIGATION WAS CARRIED OUT TO DETERMINE WHETHER THE DRAINED SHEAR STRENGTH PARAMETERS DETERMINED FROM THE STANDARD SHEARBOX TEST ARE APPLICABLE TO THE EFFECTIVE STRESS LIMIT DESIGN OF STRUCTURES INVOLVING FILL MATERIALS. A LITERATURE SURVEY WAS ALSO CARRIED OUT TO INVESTIGATE THE THEORETICAL DIFFERENCES THAT CAN BE EXPECTED BETWEEN THE SHEARBOX PARAMETERS AND THE TRIAXIAL PARAMETERS AND TO ACCUMULATE DATA ON LABORATORY COMPARISONS BETWEEN THE METHODS. /TRRL/
