A PRELIMINARY MEANS OF CLASSIFYING ROCK TO ASSESS ITS SUITABILITY FOR MECHANICAL TUNNEL EXCAVATION

A SERIES OF CLASSIFICATION TESTS ARE DESCRIBED THAT ARE USED TO ASSESS THE CHARACTERISTICS OF ROCK FOR TUNNEL EXCAVATION PURPOSES. THREE TYPES OF TESTS ARE USED: (A) STRENGTH ASSESSMENT, (B) PETROGRAPHIC ASSESSMENT, AND (C) MACHINEABILITY ASSESSMENT. THE RESULTING DATA CAN BE USED FOR MACHINE SELECTION, FURTHER TESTWORK, OR FOR CLASSIFICATION RECORDS. DETAILS OF THE TESTS AND METHODS OF THE PRESENTATION ARE GIVEN. /TRRL/
