SOME RESEARCH ON UNDERGROUND FLEXIBLE ARCHES

THE RESULTS OF LOADING TESTS ON MODEL ARCHES OF DIFFERENT SIZES, SHAPES, AND STIFFNESSES BURIED IN SAND AND CLAY FILLS WITH VARIOUS STRENGTHS AND HEIGHTS OF COVER ARE ANALYZED. PREVIOUS METHODS OF ANALYSIS ARE EXTENDED TO ESTIMATE THE STRENGTH OF FLEXIBLE UNDERGROUND ARCHES UNDER UNIFORM LOADING IN PRACTICE. THE OBSERVED FAILURE PRESSURES AND MODES OF FAILURE ARE FOUND TO BE IN REASONABLE AGREEMENT WITH THESE ESTIMATES. /TRRL/
