RESULTS OF AN "IN SITU" COMPARISON OF DIFFERENT TECHNIQUES FOR ROCK STRESS DETERMINATION

THE PAPER PRESENTS THE RESULTS OF A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF DIFFERENT "IN SITU" ROCK STRESS DETERMINATION TECHNIQUES; VIZ A BOREHOLE DEFORMATION CELL, DOORSTOPPERS, PHOTOELASTIC DISKS, LONG INVAR DCDT GAUGES, LONG STRAIN GAUGES, PHOTOELASTIC GLASS CYLINDER. THE STUDY WAS CONDUCTED IN THE FIELD; THE STRESSES WERE APPLIED BY MEANS OF FLATJACKS. CONCLUSIONS INDICATE THAT RESULTS OBTAINED FROM CURRENT STRESS DETERMINATION METHODS SHOULD NOT BE RELIED UPON TO WITHIN PLUS OR MINUS 20 OR 30% OF THE MEAN VALUES, EVEN UNDER IDEAL CONDITIONS. ACCURACY MAY DECREASE AS CONDITIONS BECOME LESS IDEAL. /TRRL/
