THREE-DIMENSIONAL ANISOTROPIC CONSOLIDATION OF CLAY AND THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PLANE STRAIN AND TRIAXIAL TEST DATA

THE PAPER DELAS WITH THE THREE-DIMENSIONAL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN STRESSES AND STRAINS FOR A CLAY THAT IS BOTH CONSOLIDATING AND UNDERGOING PLASTIC DEFORMATION. BY FOCUSING ATTENTION ON ANISOTROPIC CONSOLIDATION AT CONSTANT STRESS RATIO IT IS SHOWN THAT THIS STRESS-STRAIN RELATIONSHIP CAN BE REPRESENTED BY A PLASTIC POTENTIAL WHICH FORMS A SURFACE OF REVOLUTION ABOUT THE STRESS SPACE DIAGONAL. IF THIS IS ACCEPTED THEN THE GENERALISED CASE CAN BE PREDICTED FROM CONVENTIONAL AXISYMMETRIC TEST RESULTS. IT ALSO IMPLIES THAT THERE IS A PARTICULAR FAMILY OF ANISOTROPIC CONSOLIDATION STRESS PATHS THAT RESULT IN PLANE STRAIN AND THIS FAMILY FORMS A CONIC SURFACE IN STRESS SPACE. IT IS FURTHER SUGGESTED THAT ANY STRESS CHANGE WHICH BOTH STARTS ON AND REMAINS ON THIS SURFACE WILL CONTINUE TO MAINTAIN THE CONDITION OF PLANE STRAIN. /TRRL/
