THE INFLUENCE OF NEGATIVE NEUTRAL STRESS ON THE STRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTICS OF COMPACTED SOILS

THE PAPER STUDIES COMPACTED CLAY SOILS IN ORDER TO OBTAIN EXPERIMENTAL DATA WHICH MAY HELP TO INVESTIGATE THE RHEOLOGY OF THESE SOILS IN TERMS OF EFFECTIVE STRESSES. TWO POINTS SPECIALLY CONSIDERED ARE THE MEASUREMENT OF NEUTRAL STRESSES IN THE LIQUID PHASE OF A PARTLY SATURATED SOIL AND THE PROCEDURE FOR DETERMINING THE EVOLUTION OF THESE STRESSES DURING TESTS OF THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF THE SOIL. THE INFLUENCE ON THE BEHAVIOR OF THE SOIL AFTER SATURATION OF THE ENDOGENIC STATE OF STRESS DUE TO THE INITIAL PARTIAL SATURATION WAS ALSO EXPERIMENTALLY STUDIED. RESULTS SHOW THAT THE FABRIC PERCENT SATURATION ENTIRELY DETERMINES THE SUBSEQUENT RHEOLOGIC BEHAVIOR OF THE SPECIMENS. THE INFLUENCE OF THE COMPACTION PERCENT SATURATION ON THE SHEAR STRENGTH OF SATURATED SPECIMENS PROVES THE OCCURRENCE OF STRUCTURAL EFFECTS DUE TO INTERFACIAL STRESSES INTRODUCED BOTH DURING AND AFTER PREPARATION OF THE SAMPLES. /TRRL/
