A FLEXIBLE PROGRAM FOR AUTOMATIC ANALYSIS OF STABILITY OF SLOPES

A PROGRAM IS PRESENTED FOR AUTOMATIC ANALYSIS OF THE STABILITY OF SLOPES BY THE SIMPLIFIED BISHOP'S METHOD IN WHICH ONLY THE HORIZONTAL COMPONENT OF THE INTERACTION BETWEEN SLICES IS CONSIDERED. THE PROGRAM CAN BE APPLIED TO NATURAL SLOPES, EARTH DAMS, EMBANKMENTS, QUAY-WALLS, ETC. TWO SAFETY FACTORS ARE CALCULATED: THE RATIO OF THE RESISTING TO THE OVERTURNING MOMENT; AND THE REDUCING FACTOR WHICH APPLIED TO THE STRENGTH OF THE SOIL, BRINGS ABOUT LIMIT EQUILIBRIUM CONDITIONS AT THE SLIP SURFACE. THE ANALYSIS CAN BE BASED ON TOTAL OR ON EFFECTIVE STRESSES. IN THE LATTER CASE NEUTRAL PRESSURES CAN BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT BY MEANS OF SKEMPTON'S PARAMETER B OR OF THE PRESSURE HEAD. IT IS POSSIBLE TO CONSIDER 15 DIFFERENT SOIL TYPES LIMITED BY POLYGONAL LINES, WITH A MAXIMUM OF 50 VERTICES EACH; THE LIMIT NUMBER OF SLICES IS 100. VERTICAL LOADS WITH ANY DISTRIBUTION WHATSOEVER CAN BE APPLIED ON THE SURFACE OF THE SLOPE. A FLOW CHART OF THE PROGRAM IN AUTOCODE, AND TWO INSTANCES OF APPLICATIONS TO PRACTICAL CASES ARE GIVEN: A NATURAL SLOPE, AND THE UPSTREAM FACE OF AN EARTH DAM SUBJECTED TO A RAPID EMPTYING. /AUTHOR/
