SOME ASPECTS OF ICE FORMATION WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT

This study is an attempt better to understand the thermal and dynamic characteristics of atmospheric icing in general and accretion on sea-borne vessels and navigational aids in particular. Consideration is given to the rather scattered literature on atmospheric icing, including recent studies on hailstones and aircraft, in order to develop a consistent physical description of the icing process. The relevant non-dimensional parameters are disclosed. A detailed series of wind tunnel experiments is reported. Some comments are made on various techniques for controlling shipboard ice.
