A COMPARISON OF PERFORMANCE AND ANALYSIS OF THE UNDRAINED FOUNDATION BEHAVIOR OF TWO EMBANKMENTS

THE EFFECT OF SEVERAL SAMPLING METHODS ON THE UNDRAINED PROPERTIES OF A CEMENTED CLAY IS REPORTED. SINCE THE DIFFERENT METHODS CAUSE DIFFERENT DEGREES OF DISTURBANCE, THE QUALITATIVE EFFECTS OF DISTURBANCE ON THE UNDRAINED PROPERTIES ARE EXAMINED. THE QUALITATIVE TRENDS ARE USED AS A GUIDE IN THE CHOICE OF UNDRAINED SOIL PROPERTIES FOR THE ANALYSIS OF TWO EMBANKMENT SITES. THE CHOICE MADE IS FURTHER SUBSTANTIATED BY THE FIELD PERFORMANCE OF THE EMBANKMENTS. BOTH UNDRAINED SETTLEMENTS AND GENERATED EXCESS PORE PRESSURES ARE DISCUSSED, AND CONCLUSIONS ARE DRAWN REGARDING THE SELECTION OF UNDRAINED PROPERTIES. /RATAOC/
