STABILIZATION PROCEDURES FOR PUERTO RICO LOW GRADE SOILS

THE PUBLICATION REPORTS PROCEDURES USED IN PUERTO RICO FOR THE STABILIZATION OF LOW GRADE SOILS (NAMELY, DENSIFICATION AND CHEMICAL STAHBILIZATION) AS RELATED TO HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION. THE SOIL CHARACTERISTICS WHICH CONTRIBUTE TO POOR ENGINEERING QUALITIES ARE LISTED, AS ARE ALSO, THE DELETERIOUS EFFECTS OF WATER. DENSIFICATION, MIXING AND THE CHEMICAL ADDITIVE METHOD OF SOIL STABILIZATION ARE DISCUSSED IN DETAIL. ASPHALT, CCEMENT, LIME AND LIME-CEMENT ARE THE IMPORTANT STABILIZER MATERIALS USED AS SOIL ADDITIVE. THE TYPES AND CHARACTERISTICS OF ASPHALTIC MATERIALS ARE TABULATED. THE SOIL TESTS WHICCH DETERMINE THE CHOICE OF SOIL TREATMENT ARE REVIEWED. THE RECONNAISSANCE PHASE OF THE INVESTIGATION INCLUDES ANY OR SEVERAL OF THE FOLLOWING: AIR PHOTOS, GEOLOGIC REPORTS AND MAPS, RECORDS OF PAST CONSTRUCTIONS, AND VISUAL INSPECTION. THE EXPLORATORY TESTS INCLUDE THE METHODS OF BORING, ELECTRICAL, GEOPHYSICAL AND PITS TESTING. LABORATORY METHODS USED TO STUDY SOIL PROPERTIES ARE LISTED. THE OBTAINING OF HIGH QUALITY UNDISTRUBED SAMPLES FOR TESTING IS IMPORTANT. IN A DISCUSSION OF THE SALIENT TECHNICAL ASPECTS OF THE DENSIFICATION METHOD OF SOIL STABILIZATION, CONSIDERATION IS GIVEN TO COMPACTION, DEWATERING AND PRELOADING.
