A STUDY ON TRANSVERSE STRENGTH OF ORE CARRIERS AND ORE/OIL CARRIERS
In this report, the strength of ore carriers and ore/oil carriers is examined in order to establish a basis of transverse strength calculation. At first, a method of calculation is established. The calculation is divided into two steps. The first step is the calculation of stresses when the relative displacements of longitudinal members are neglected. The second step is the calculation of stresses due to the relative displacements of the longitudinal members. The stresses calculated by the method were found to agree fairly well with measured stress values of an actual ship. Then, for transverse strength calculation standard load conditions for both ore and oil services are adopted among several typical conditions. Analyses of the transverse strength of actual ore carriers and ore/oil carriers were carried out under the said standard conditions.
