THE STARTING CHARACTERISTICS OF AUTOMOBILE PLATOONS

THE RESULTS OF A SERIES OF EXPERIMENTS CARRIED OUT TO DETERMINE THE STARTING CHARACTERISTICS OF AUTOMOBILE PLATOONS ARE REPORTED. IN PARTICULAR, THE SPACE-TIME TRAJECTORIES OF THE LEAD AND LAST VEHICLES HAVE BEEN EXAMINED IN DETAIL IN ORDER TO DETERMINE THE MACROSCOPIC PROPERTIES OF VEHICULAR PLATOONS. THE EFFECTS OF SUCH FACTORS AS INITIAL INTERVEHICLE SAPCING, SPEED, STARTING DELAY, AND ACCELERATION BEHAVIOR ARE PRESENTED. IN ADDITION, CALCULATIONS HAVE BEEN MADE FOR THE FLOW OF THE PLATOON AS A FUNCTION OF POSITION ALONG THE ROADWAY AS WELL AS FOR THE SPEED OF PROPAGATION OF THE STARTING WAVE AS THE PLATOON ACCELERATES UP TO SPEED.
