CHECKING COFFERDAMS FOR BRIDGE PIERS

COFFERDAMS ARE BOTTOMLESS SHEET-PILING BOXES IN WHICH EXCAVATION UNDER WATER AND PILE DRIVING ARE TO BE DONE, AND CONCRETE FOR THE BASE OF A PIER PLACED. THE DETERMINATION OF THE DEPTH OF THE SHEET PILING BELOW THE BOTTOM OF THE EXCAVATION TO PREVENT "BLOW IN" OF THE SOFT SOIL MATERIAL INTO THE COFFERDAM IS DISCUSSED. SIMPLE ANALYTICAL AND GRAPHICAL SOLUTIONS ARE GIVEN, AND A LARGE SCALE LABORATORY EXPERIMENT IS DESCRIBED. /AUTHOR/
