FACTORS AFFECTING THE ACCURACY OF SETTLEMENT RATE FORECASTS

A BRIEF REVIEW IS PRESENTED COVERING TERZAGHI'S PIONEERING WORK OF A MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS AS WELL AS PALMER'S AND BARBER'S ADDITIONS TO THE ANALYSIS PERTAINING TO THE DRAINAGE OF WATER FROM THE BOUNDARIES OF A CLAY LAYER. OTHER CONDITIONS EXAMINED ARE THE RATE OF COMPRESSION OF A CLAY LAYER: (1) SANDWICHED BETWEEN SOIL LAYERS OF LOW PERMEABILITY, (2) BENEATH A CONCRETE MAT FOUNDATION COVERING A LARGE AREA, AND (3) BENEATH A MASSIVE CONCRETE FOUNDATION COVERING A SMALL AREA. ESTIMATES VARY FROM THE VALUES OF THE COEFFICIENTS OF PERMEABILITY ON DIFFERENT SAMPLES FROM THE SAME LAYER TO SUCH AN EXTENT THAT OBSERVED RATE OF SETTLEMENT MAY BE ENTIRELY DIFFERENT.
