PROJECT OUTLINE--TESTS TO EVALUATE RAILROAD BALLAST

THE PURPOSE OF THESE TESTS IS TO EVALUATE THE PERFORMANCE OF RAILROAD BALLASTING MATERIALS UNDER THE SAME ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS, AND TO DEVELOP SIMPLE LABORATORY TESTS TO PROVIDE COST INDICES FOR LONG-RANGE COST COMPARISONS. THE TESTS CONSIST OF THREE MAJOR PARTS: (1) REPETITIVE LOAD TESTS ON A SECTION OF TRACK AND ROADBED SIMULATING FIELD CONDITIONS; (2) STANDARD LABORATORY TESTS FOR BALLAST MATERIALS CHARACTERTISTICS (UNIT WEIGHT, ABSORPTION, SPECIFIC GRAVITY, GRADING, MAGNESIUM SULFATE SOUNDNESS, FREEZING AND THAWING, ABRASION, PLASTICITY, DURABILITY, ETC.); AND (3) CORRELATION OF FIELD PERFORMANCE WITH LABORATORY TESTING. THE LABORATORY TRACK SECTION SIMULATION, THE PHYSICAL TESTS, AND THE FIELD TESTS ARE DESCRIBED IN DETAIL. THE FIELD PHASE OF THIS TEST WILL NECESSARILY TAKE CONSIDERABLE TIME, SO THAT NO SPECIFIC EVALUATION OF THE RESULTS ARE AVAILABLE AS YET, I.E., THE RELATIONSHIP OF FIELD AND LABORATORY TESTS HAVE NOT YET BEEN DETERMINED.
