LIME STABILIZATION OF SOILS FOR HIGHWAY PURPOSES

RESEARCH WAS CONDUCTED TO DETERMINE IF LIME COULD BE ECONOMICALLY AND EFFECTIVELY USED TO STABILIZE ILLINOIS SOILS FOR SUBSEQUENT USE IN PAVEMENT CONSTRUCTION. LIME-SOIL MIXTURES WHICH ARE REPRESENTATIVE OF MATERIALS AVAILABLE THROUGHOUT ILLINOIS WERE STUDIED. A LITERATURE SURVEY WAS CONDUCTED AND TEST SECTIONS OBSERVED IN RANDOLPH COUNTY. UNCONFINED COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH TESTS WERE MADE OF THE NATURAL AND LIME TREATED SOILS TO DETERMINE IF THIS SOIL WOULD REACT WITH LIME TO ACHIEVE A SUBSTANTIAL STRENGTH INCREASE. THE STUDY FOUND THAT ALL MEDIUM AND FINE-TEXTURED ILLINOIS SOILS ARE BENEFITTED IN SOME WAY BY LIME TREATMENT. THE STABILIZATION OF REACTIVE SOILS WITH QUALITY LIME PRODUCES HIGH QUALITY LIME-SOIL MIXTURES THAT CAN BE USED AS STRUCTURAL PAVING MATERIALS. LIME STABILIZATION OF SOILS THAT DO NOT REACT TO PRODUCE SUBSTANTIAL STRENGTH INCREASE IS BENEFICIAL. IMPROVED PLASTICITY, WORKABILITY, SWELL, CBR, AND DRYING CHARACTERISTICS, IN MANY CASES ECONOMICALLY JUSTIFY LIME TREATMENT. THE MIXTURE DESIGN PROCESS AND SUG- GESTED TESTING METHODS DEVELOPED ARE SATISFACTORY AND CAN BE UTILIZED FOR ANALYZING TYPICAL ILLINOIS SOILS. INFORMATION PERTAINING TO THE PROPERTIES OF LIME-SOIL MIXTURES CAN BE OF VALUE IN DEVELOPING THICKNESS DESIGN PROCEDURES AND EVALUATING PROBABLE FIELD PERFORMANCE AND BEHAVIOR. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT LIME SHOULD BE USED EXTENSIVELY IN ALL TYPES OF PAVEMENT CONSTRUCTURE IN ILLINOIS IN ORDER TO MINIMIZE TO THE GREATEST EXTENT POSSIBLE, THE INFLUENCE OF THE SUBGRADE SOIL ON PAVEMENT BEHAVIOR AND PERFORMANCE.
