CLOSURE ON EMBANKMENT PORE PRESSURES DURING CONSTRUCTION

THE DISCUSSERS, LITTLE AND DE OLIVEIRA POINT OUT THAT NEGATIVE PORE PRESSURES PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF CONSTRUCTION PORE PRESSURES. THIS IS ACKNOWLEDGED IN THE PAPER WHERE IT IS STATED THAT SURFACE TENSION IS NOT CONSIDERED BY ANY AVAILABLE METHODS OF PREDICTING CONSTRUCTION PORE PRESSURES AND CAN LEAD TO ERRORS IN ESTIMATING CONSTRUCTION PORE PRESSURES. IT IS AGREED WITH RAO THAT HEAVIER COMPACTION EQUIPMENT COULD, TO SOME DEGREE, INFLUENCE PORE PRESSURE DEVELOPMENT, AS THIS TYPE OF EQUIPMENT WOULD GENERALLY PRODUCE A DENSER SOIL WITH A HIGHER DEGREE OF SATURATION FOR THE SAME NUMBER OF PASSES AS LIGHTER EQUIPMENT. THE DISCUSSION BY LITTLE DEMONSTRATES THE UNIQUE IMPORTANCE OF LOCAL CONDITIONS ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF CONSTRUCTION PORE PRESSURES. IN CONTRAST TO THEIR BEHAVIOR IN EMBANKMENT FILLS, OVERCONSOLIDATED CLAYS IN FOUNDATIONS BENEATH EMBANKMENTS CAN GENERATE QUITE LARGE PORE PRESSURES.
