CLOSURE ON END BEARING AND SKIN FRICTION RESISTANCE OF PILES

THE TELL-TALE SYSTEM MEASURES ONLY THE DISPLACEMENT OF THE PILE POINT AND THE COMPRESSION OF THE LOWER PART OF THE TEST PILE. BY ESTIMATING FOR THE COMPOSITE PILE SECTION THE EQUIVALENT MODULUS OF ELASTICITY, IT IS POSSIBLE TO CALCULATE APPROXIMATELY THE PART OF THE TOTAL APPLIED LOAD TRANSFERRED TO THE UNDERLYING SOIL THROUGH POINT BEARING. ASSUMPTIONS MADE IN THE CALCULATIONS ARE STRESSED. THE TELL-TALE SYSTEM HAS PRIMARILY BEEN USED TO EVALUATE THE ULTIMATE BEARING CAPACITY OF POINT BEARING PILES, WHICH HAVE BEEN DRIVEN THROUGH A DEEP LAYER OF SOFT CLAY INTO A LAYER OF SAND, GRAVEL OR MORAINE. THIS SYSTEM IS NOT A RESEARCH TOOL. IT IS MAINLY USED FOR ROUTINE INVESTIGATIONS OF THE BEARING CAPACITY OF PRECAST REINFORCED CONCRETE PILES WHEN NEGATIVE SKIN FRICTION RESISTANCE WILL AFFECT THE LONGTIME BEARING CAPACITY OF THE PILE.
