FRENCH CONTRACTORS HAVE COMPLETED A NUMBER OF VERTICAL EARTH RETAINING WALLS, UP TO 70 FT HIGH, HELD TOGETHER SOLELY BY INTERNAL FRICTION. THESE WALLS ON THE FRENCH RIVIERA HIGHWAY STAND ON THEIR OWN BECAUSE THEY ARE REINFORCED WITH 2-IN. WIDE, 0.16-IN. THICK STEEL STRIPS PLACED BETWEEN EACH 10-IN. LIFT OF COMPACTED EARTH FILL. THE EARTH USED IN SUCH A STRUCTURE CAN RANGE FROM GRANULAR TO SLIGHTLY COHESIVE SOIL AND CAN INCLUDE ANY PARTICLE SIZE. REINFORCEMENT CAN BE FABRICATED IN ANY SHAPE AND FROM EITHER METAL OR PLASTIC. THE REINFORCING STRIPS ARE DISTRIBUTED 10-IN. APART AT RIGHT ANGLES TO THE WALL FACE ALONG THE BOTTOM COURSES AND SPREAD TO ABOUT 3 FEET APART AT THE TOP. THE COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION BETWEEN THE EARTH AND REINFORCEMENT AND THE GEOMETRICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE REINFORCEMENT COMPONENTS DETERMINE FRICTION WITHOUT SLIPPING, RESULTING IN AN ADHESIVE CONDITION. AS THE PARTICLES OF EARTH SLIDE, THE REINFORCEMENT AUTOMATICALLY IS PHENOMENON OF PLASTICITY WITH LARGE DEFORMATION BEFORE BREAKING. THIN STEEL OR ALUMINUM SHELLS ARE SUFFICIENT TO ENCLOSE THE MASS STRUCTURE. THE SHELLS MUST BE FLEXIBLE ENOUGH TO PERMIT ALL VOLUME DEFORMATIONS AND BE THICK ENOUGH TO GUARANTEE LONG LIFE AGAINST CORROSION. ABOVE THE EARTH RETAINING WALL, A NATURALLY SLOPING 130-FT. EARTH EMBANKMENT WAS BUILT TO CARRY TWO ROADWAYS AT DIFFERENT ELEVATIONS. THE INTERNAL FRICTION TECHNIQUE HAS APPRECIABLY REDUCED CONSTRUCTION COSTS ALONG THE HIGHWAY.
