SELECTING THE RIGHT EARTHFILL COMPACTORS

SELECTING THE CORRECT TYPE AND MAKE OF COMPACTING EQUIPMENT REQUIRES A KNOWLEDGE OF A NUMBER OF VARIABLES: (1) MOISTURE CONTENT OF THE SOIL, (2) SOIL TYPE, (3) EQUIPMENT TYPE, (4) THICKNESS OF LIFT, AND (5) COMPACTIVE EFFORT OR FORCE. ALL COMPACTION EQUIPMENT USED ON EARTH FILL PROJECTS MUST BE ABLE TO TRANSMIT THE FOLLOWING FORCES OR ACTIONS TO THE SOIL: PRESSURE, IMPACT, VIBRATION, SHEARING, AND MANIPULATION. THE FOLLOWING EQUIPMENT FOR COMPACTING EARTHFILL ARE DISCUSSED: SHEEPFOOT, PNEUMATIC, VIBRATORY AND SEGMENTED PAD ROLLERS. ADVANTAGES AND LIMITATIONS OF EACH ARE DESCRIBED.
