Application of accessibility measures

Much recent attention has been focussed on the issue of liveability in urban areas, of which transport accessibility is an important component. Accessibility refers to the ease and convenience of access to amenities, including employment, shops and services, or anything else that people want to access. In its purest form, accessibility considers both the mobility of individuals and the location efficiency of amenities to provide a robust measure of the true purpose of our transport networks. Good accessibility has also been shown to promote increased land values. In order to be able to manage and improve accessibility of our urban areas, it is necessary to have access to appropriate measures as well as benchmarks. This paper outlines the theory of accessibility measurement in simple terms, and provides a few examples of the application of accessibility measures from the author’s experience.
