The latest developments on implementation of BRT Systems

Bus rapid transit (BRT) systems have been pointed as a potential planning instrument for improving urban transport systems around the world. BRT systems require a great deal of transformation and innovation to build upon existing bus-based technology. Furthermore, it is often argued that BRT can achieve high levels of effectiveness in terms of: implementation time and costs; adaptability to demand variations; and operational efficiency. According to Cain et al, BRT systems are now perceived as instruments of urban renew and capable to create a great deal of pride and social inclusion. Aiming at sharing the diversity of the adopted approaches in the implementation of BRT systems, this paper presents a wide range of experiences around the world. Also, the latest developments on the implementation of BRT systems in Latin America are detailed. Special attention is given to Brazil, where the upcoming 2014 Football World Cup and 2016 Olympic games have motivated the federal government to create a national policy to support the Growth Acceleration Program in which public transport has received priority. After this introduction, the second section presents a brief overview of BRT which have been successfully operating for a number of years. Next, the third section details BRT projects in 12 Brazilian municipalities, which are followed by the analysis and conclusion sections.
