STABILIZATION OF UNDISTURBED QUICK CLAY BY SALT WELLS

STUDIES AND EXPERIMENTS CONDUCTED ON THE DIFFUSION OF SALTS IN AN UNDISTURBED QUICK CLAY ARE SUMMARIZED TO DETERMINE THE INFLUENCE ON THE GEOTECHNICAL QUALITIES OF THE CLAY. THE CONSEQUENCES OF THESE RESULTS ON PRACTICAL FIELD STABILIZATION BY SALT WELLS ARE OUTLINED. RESULTS SHOW THAT DIFFUSION OF SALT WELLS MAY BE A PRACTICAL SOLUTION TO SOIL STABILIZATION PROBLEMS. FOR THE INVESTIGATED QUICK CLAY OF ILLITIC-CHLORITIC COMPOSITION, POTASSIUM CHLORIDE SEEMS TO HAVE THE BEST EFFECT. THE QUICK CLAY IS OF A COMPOSITION COMMON IN NORWAY AND IN SMOE PARTS OF SWEDEN, AND IT IS BELIEVED THAT THE RESULTS ARE GENERALLY VALID FOR CLAYS OF THIS TYPE. STABILIZATION BY DIFFUSION WITH SLAKED LIME IS NOT PRACTICAL. TEST RESULTS SHOW THAT IT TAKES ABOUT 5.5 KG OF POTASSIUM (CORRESPONDING TO 10.5 KG POTASSIUM CHLORIDE) FOR THE FASTEST STABILIZATION OF ONE SQUARE METER OF SOIL OF THIS TYPE.
