Steps to a Walkable Community: A Guide for Citizens, Planners, and Engineers
Walking is a basic mode of transportation with wide reaching impacts on our public health, social equity, transportation infrastructure and economic development. The past century, however, has seen a decline in walking and pedestrian friendly communities, as automobile oriented communities prevailed. These trends resulted in an increase in obesity levels for U.S. residents and an increase in traffic congestion on our streets. This report discusses ways to build pedestrian friendly communities. It presents a number of varied strategies, from land use patterns to driving behaviors, that communities can customize for their own use. It focuses on ways to build and rebuild cities and suburbs that encourage its residents to walk. It also discusses how to make walking safer, and presents traffic engineering tools to enhance pedestrian safety. In addition, advocacy efforts are described which can help a community attain walkable goals.
