DRAINAGE GALLERIES IN MORAINE DEPOSIT AT SONSTEVANN DAM

THE SONSTEVANN DAM, WHICH IS LOCATED IN THE MOUNTAIN REGIONS OF CENTRAL NORWAY AND IS PART OF THE UVDAL POWER DEVELOPMENT, WAS COMPLETED IN 1966. THE DAM IS 44 METERS HIGH WITH A CREST LENGTH OF 320 METERS AND A TOTAL VOLUME OF 500,000 CUBIC METERS. IT IS BUILT ON TOP OF A MORAINE DEPOSIT WITH A MAXIMUM THICKNESS OF 20 METERS. IT IS CONSTRUCTED WITH CENTRAL CORE OF MORAINE AND WITH SUPPORTING FILL OF QUARRIED ROCK. A BRIEF REVIEW IS PRESENTED OF THE SITE CONDITIONS, AND THE DESIGN IS GIVEN WITH A MORE EXTENSIVE DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAINAGE GALLERIES CONSTRUCTED NEAR THE DOWNSTREAM TOE OF THE DAM. THE DRAINAGE SYSTEM CONSISTS OF GALLERIES, TRENCHES, AND DRAINAGE POCKETS. THE PERFORMANCE OF THE DRAINAGE SYSTEM WAS CHECKED BY MEASURING THE PORE PRESSURE IN THE MORAINE DEPOSIT AND THE AMOUNT OF DRAINAGE WATER FROM THE GALLERIES. THE PORE PRESSURE MEASURED IN THE MORAINE DEPOSIT ON THE DOWNSTREAM SIDE OF THE GALLERIES INDICATES THAT THE DRAINAGE SYSTEM IS FUNCTIONING SATISFACTORILY. THE LEAKAGE WATER FROM EITHER OF THE GALLERIES HAS GRADUALLY INCREASED DURING THE FILLING OF THE RESERVOIR TO APPROXIMATELY 1/4 LITRE/SEC. AT HIGH WATER LEVEL. PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS CARRIED OUT DURING THE FIRST YEAR OF OPERATION SHOW A TOTAL LEAKAGE THROUGH THE DAM OF APPROXIMATELY 1.5 LITRE/SEC. WHICH IS OF THE SAME ORDER OF MAGNITUDE AS PREDICTED.
