CASMSAR: An Integrated Airborne SAR Mapping System

This article describes how synthetic aperture radar (SAR) mapping technology is the most effective remote sensing tool that offers all-weather, day and night operations in difficult areas. The article shows how China is a large country with diverse topography where many regions are persistently cloudy, rainy, and snow covered, which makes it difficult to collect useful optical images for mapping applications. SAR mapping is an indispensable remote sensing technology. An airborne system can be deployed rapidly which allows for flexible data collection. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop an airborne SAR mapping system for landscape mapping and emergency response. CASMAR, China’s first airborne SAR mapping system has been developed by the Chinese Academy of Surveying & Mapping CASM in collaboration with several other institutes in China. CASMSAR represents a significant achievement in mapping science and technology.
