LAND SINKS ALONG FREEWAY JOB

LAND SUBSIDENCE APPARENTLY CAUSED BY THE CONSTRUCTION OF A DEPRESSED SECTION OF INTERSTATE 5 IN SACRAMENTO HAS DAMAGED A NUMBER OF STRUCTURES NEAR THE FREEWAY. THIS DAMAGE IS DESCRIBED. IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT SETTLEMENT MAY HAVE BEEN CAUSED IN PART BY LOWERING THE GROUND WATER LEVEL IN THE CONSTRUCTION AREA. NO DAMAGE OCCURRED TO BUILDINGS CONXTRUCTED ON PILES. A SYSTEM OF RELIEF WELLS WAS CONSTRUCTED INSIDE A COFFER DAM TO REGULATE THE WATER LEVEL. CURTAILMENT OF GROUND WATER PUMPING BY CONTRACTOR HAS RESULTED IN STABILITY AND RISE OF THE GROUND WATER LEVEL IN THE SURROUNDING AREA.
