PLANE PLASTIC FAILURE IN COHESIONLESS SOILS

THE EQUATIONS OF PLANE PLASTIC EQUILIBRIUM OF COHESIONLESS SOILS POSSESSING SELF-WEIGHT ARE EXAMINED AND AN IMPROVED NUMERICAL SOLUTION IS PROPOSED. USE OF A COMPUTER ALLOWS THE COMPUTATION OF PLASTIC FIELDS FROM STRESS-FREE BOUNDARIES. THE THEORY IS APPLIED TO THE FAILURE OF RETAINING WALLS, SLOPES, AND DEEP FOUNDATIONS AND EXTENDED TO TAKE ACCOUNT OF NON-HOMOGENEITY IN THE CROSS SECTION. SATISFACTORY SOLUTIONS ARE OBTAINED IF THE BOUNDARY AND FIELD CONDITIONS LIE IN THE RANGE OF OBSERVED EXPERIENCE. /AUTHOR/
