CONSTRUCTION PORE PRESSURES IN THREE EARTH DAMS-CLOSURE

THE STATEMENTS INTRODUCED BY J. M. TURNBULL WITH WHICH THE AUTHOR DISAGREES ARE DISCUSSED. THE MATTER OF DIFFERENCE IN TERMINOLOGY PIEZOMETER HEAD OR PORE-WATER PRESSURE ARE DISCUSSED. DIFFERING STATEMENTS ON THE EFFECT OF THE PIEZOMETER HEAD ON THE SHEARING RESISTANCE OF SOIL ARE DISCUSSED. TURNBULL ALSO STATES THAT THE SHEAR TEST FOR DESIGN CHECK DURING CONSTRUCTION SHOULD BE MADE IN THE UNDRAINED CONDITION. THE EFFECTIVE-STRESS METHOD OF ANALYSIS IS CITED. THE AUTHOR INDICATES THAT NEITHER THE TOTAL-STRESS METHOD NOR THE EFFECTIVE-STRESS METHOD IS ENTIRELY SATISFACTORY. IT IS OBSERVED THAT RAO IS CORRECT IN POINTING OUT THAT THE HEAVY EQUIPMENT FOR COMPACTION HAS A MARKED INFLUENCE ON THE COMPRESSION OF THE NEWLY PLACED (TOP LAYERS) OF SOIL. SETTLEMENT OBSERVATION USING CROSS-ARMS WERE INSTALLED IN ALL THREE DAMS. OVERCOMPACTION IS DISCUSSED AND IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THE OVERCOMPACTION WITH A RESULTANT HIGHER DENSITY IS CONSIDERED BENEFICIAL FOR DAMS IN AN EARTHQUAKE REGION AFTER THE DISSIPATION OF CONSTRUCTION PORE PRESSURE.
