THE DYNAMIC PENETRATION TEST: A STANDARD THAT IS NOT STANDARDIZED

DYNAMIC PENETRATION TESTS SUCH AS THE SPT ARE USED WIDELY IN AN EFFORT TO GET RESULTS THAT CAN BE INTERPRETED BY ENGINEERS ON A UNIVERSAL BASIS. HOWEVER, THOSE ENGAGED IN DOING THESE TESTS FREQUENTLY CHANGE THE PROCEDURE OF THE TEST OR THE DIMENSIONS OF THE TOOLS AND CONTINUE TO CALL THE TESTS STANDARD, APPARENTLY AWARE THAT CHANGES RESULT IN VARIATIONS IN THE PENETRATION RESISTANCE NUMBER. TO RECTIFY EXISTING CONFUSION, AN APPROPRIATE PROCEDURE FOR BORING, SOUNDING, AND SAMPLING IS DESCRIBED; THE SPT IN ITS ORIGINAL FORM IS DESCRIBED IN DETAIL; AS EXAMPLES OF VARIATIONS, TWO MODIFIED AND IMPROVED SAMPLERS AND TEST PROCEDURES USED IN SOUTH AMERICA ARE MENTIONED; FINALLY THE APPLICABILITY AND THE SCOPE OF THE TEST ARE DISCUSSED. CONFLICTING OPINIONS BETWEEN THE AUTHORS HAVE ARISEN, AND THEIR RESPECTIVE VIEWPOINTS ARE INDICATED. /RRL(A)/
