CALCULATION OF FOOTINGS ON COMPRESSIBLE FOUNDATION BEDS

THE CALCULATION OF CIRCULAR AND STRIP FOUNDATIONS IS DISCUSSED. THE RIGID CIRCULAR SLAB IS IN CONTACT WITH AN ELASTIC LAYER RESTING ON A NON-COMPRESIBLE BED. FORMULAS HAVE BEEN DERIVED FOR CALCULATING EXTERNAL VERTICAL LOADS DISTRIBUTED OVER THE CIRCULAR SLAB. THE DEFLECTION OF THE SLAB DEPENDS ON THE THICKNESS OF THE COMPRESSIBLE LAYER. AN EXAMPLE IS GIVEN OF PILE FOUNDATION GRILLAGE RESTING ON SEPARATE IMMOBILE POINTS (PILES) AND AT THE SAME TIME ON THE LAYER BETWEEN THE PILES. THE PILE FOUNDATION GRILLAGE IS TREATED AS A NON-UNIFORM CONTINUOUS BEAM RESTING ON PILES. IN THIS METHOD THE CONTINUOUS BEAM IS TREATED AS IF IT CONSISTED OF A NUMBER OF SINGLE UNIFORM BEAMS RESTING ON A COMPRESSIBLE LAYER. NUMERICAL EXAMPLES SHOW THAT, BY TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE REACTION OF THE SOIL UNDER THE PILE FOUNDATION GRILLAGE, IT IS POSSIBLE TO OBTAIN A MORE ECONOMICAL SOLUTION TO THE DESIGN OF STRUCTURES. /RRL/
