SETTLEMENT OF ORGANIC SOFT CLAYS UNDER EMBANKMENTS /IN FRENCH/

EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES ON EMBANKMENTS BUILT ON THICK ORGANIC SOFT CLAY ARE DESCRIBED. IN-SITU SUBSIDENCE, LATERAL DISPLACEMENT AND PORE PRESSURE MEASUREMENTS WERE CARRIED OUT DURING AND AFTER CONSTRUCTION. IN-SITU AND LABORATORY STUDIES WERE ALSO CONDUCTED ON SUBGRADE SOILS. INSTANT SUBSIDENCE AND ONE-DIMENSIONAL CONSOLIDATION SUBSIDENCE WERE CALCULATED. CASES OF DRAINAGE BY MEANS OF VERTICAL SAND DRAINS AND MULTILAYERS WERE CONSIDERED. DEVIATIONS ON A NUMBER OF SITES BETWEEN CALCULATED AND OBSERVED SETTLEMENTS ARE EXPLAINED BY THE MAGNITUDE OF THE SETTLEMENT CAUSED BY LATERAL DISPLACEMENTS. THE INFLUENCE OF THE SAFETY COEFFICIENT ON LATERAL DISPLACEMENTS IS INVESTIGATED. MENTION IS MADE OF THE EFFICIENCY OF VERTICAL SAND DRAIN FOR ACCELERATING SETTLEMENTS IN ORGANIC SOFT CLAY. /RRL/
